My question is that I was told my 13 year old son needs to get a tetanus shot. Should I be worried?
Read it…
Tetanus is a bacteria that can get into wounds and then is creates a neurotoxin. The toxin causes muscles to contract and hold their contraction and not let up. This can, really, cause paralysis. I found out that, without vaccination, you have about a 20% chance of death if you get tetanus and don’t get a shot. About 250,000 deaths worldwide attributed to tetanus, so it’s nothing to just brush off.
Vaccines are probably the most effective health interventions ever. There’s pretty much no more polio, measles, diphtheria, in the developed world. I don’t want to get off on another vaccine tangent here. I get buried in email when I do.
There are some very rare side effects that I’m not even going to get into because they are so rare. If your son had reactions to vaccines in the past, like when he got his other immunizations, you may want to talk with the doctor about other choices and what the reaction was and stuff.
I would highly recommend getting the shot. The danger is pretty much nothing and the benefits of getting the shot far far outweigh the risks.
