Here’s some more pharmacy news. In 2007, the world, not just the US, but the whole world spent $693 billion on pharmaceuticals. It is predicted that the amount rose to $737 billion for 2008 and will be over $1 trillion with five years. This amount includes all prescription and over the counter medication.
Those are just some big numbers. My philosophy is that prescription drugs are necessary and have their place in medicine. The problem is, too many people take too many drugs (credit Larry Frieders). So many of us feel it is necessary to just take a pill to fix us. By continuing to just pop pills, you are subconsciously telling yourself that your body is not capable of healing itself, you need a drug.
When you are continuing to take prescription drug after prescription drug, this is called polypharmacy. When someone is on five or six different medications, it’s because they have not taken care of their body for so long that the parts are wearing out. Generally they are overweight so their blood pressure goes up, they are also borderline diabetic so the doctor puts them on a “sugar pill” to help that, then they have difficulty breathing because they smoked for 30 years so they need an asthma inhaler. Carrying all that weight around causes pain so they take pain pills. All these pills causes their stomach to hurt, you guessed it, stomach pills.
Now I’m not saying this is everyone, but people think they can just take a little pill and continue living a destructive lifestyle. If you want to get off those pills, get off the poison, sort of speak, you are going to have to change your lifestyle. Eat a little better, exercise a little more, just common sense stuff. We are led to believe that we don’t have any control over what happens to us, health wise, and we do. We have complete control over these so-called diseases. I don’t like to call them diseases because for the most part, if you have diabetes, I’m talking type 2, or high blood pressure, it’s probably because you lifestyled your way into that condition. If you ate like crap, layed on the couch every night after work and ate cheetoes, what do you expect.
